Shaun T. Insanity or Tony Horton P90X?

Ok so you have decided to start a workout program, maybe because it was your New Year’s resolution to lose those pounds you acquired over the holidays or you just want to look better and feel better.

You have seen the late night infomercials on Insanity and P90X and are wondering which one you should do to get the best results. Before you can answer that question, you need to look at your fitness level, time to workout and how long of a program you want to undertake. With that being said let us look at both programs.

P90X uses the training principle called “muscle confusion” which involves using a variety of exercises, sets, reps, and rest periods. The theory behind this is that if you constantly do the same workouts/exercises your body will get used to it and thus reach a plateau. In other words, your progress will stop producing results and become ineffective. Changing up your routine and exercises will make sure your body does not reach a plateau.

P90X is a 90-day program broken down into 3 phases with each phase harder than the previous. There are 12 workouts ranging from resistance/strength workouts to cardio/plyometrics and even has yoga and Kenpo karate moves. Workouts are from 1 hour to 1 ½ hours long and you get a recovery week between phases.

INSANITY on the other hand is a 60-day program and is broken down into two phases. It is a complete body weight workout program so you will not need any equipment besides a water bottle and towel. A heart rate monitor should also be used to make sure you are working in your zone.

Shaun has added a twist to interval training with his Max interval training he will have you performing long bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short 30-second periods of rest. Think of traditional intervals turned on it head. Shaun will have you digging deeper than you ever thought could possible.

You should already have a strong fitness foundation and not have been a couch potato to take on Insanity as even the warm-ups brutal. With P90X, you can gradually work your way up.

With INSANITY you need to make sure that your joints and flexible and resilient as you will be performing a lot of running and jumping moves and if not you will wear them out. A good pair of cross-training shoes is necessary due to the constant pounding from all the jumping, running, squatting and more.

So which one is better? The answer is that they both will get you in the best shape taking very different training approach. What do you want? Do you want a program that is very cardio intense using Max interval or one that incorporates resistance/strength and mixes things up. Do you want your new body in 60 or 90 days? Whichever you choose please note that both workouts are extreme and will give you incredible results.
